One morning, Will lamented to me that he didn’t think he would be able to pass a German proficiency exam so he could go to school in Germany. I told him that if he decides he won’t, of course he won’t! But if he decides he will and he spends the next year studying German, then he will be able to pass! After I lectured him a bit, he just said, “Okay, thanks Yoda.”
That night I decided that I was going to try to start a business for myself. No, not try. I was going to do it and I was going to give us a residual income to sustain us while he is studying in Germany.
The next morning I had to run about 4 miles for my running and jogging class. I hit the half way mark and felt good. I paused for a bit to record my split time, but as soon as I caught my breath, I was off running again. Before I knew it, I hit the main road. The remaining run was uphill, but I wondered if I could do it. No, I can do it! I hit the hard part of the hill and I began to wonder if I would make it to the top. Then I decided I would and you know what?
I did.
Do or do not, there is no try
I’m a bit of a Star Wars geek. I’ll own that. But Star Wars geek or no, there is incredible power in one of Yoda’s most famous quotes: “Do or do not, there is no try.”
I forget about this quote a lot, but it is so powerful when I do remember it. With this quote, I can encourage someone I love to not give up on himself, and I can convince myself that I can do what I set my mind to.
I am enough.
And so are you.
Are you going to do it, or not?
