One of the hardest parts of my family’s transition was actually getting all of the ingredients. We had baking soda, vinegar, and coarse salt (and water of course), but for all the other ingredients, we had to figure where the best place to buy was. I mainly focused on 4 stores: Costco, Amazon, Mountain Rose Herbs (a favorite of many natural bloggers), and my local co-op. Each has it’s pros and cons, and it’s up to you to balance those and decide where to buy your ingredients.
Costco and Amazon have very low prices, and those two stores are where I got the majority of my initial stock. I got 13.5 pounds of baking soda for about $6 at Costco. I would definitely prefer to buy from small, local companies, but given my current financial situation, that wasn’t an option. As I confirm the recipes I’ve found and get a better feel for how much product I need, I may try to move away from Amazon, but the initial purchase of all the ingredients was pretty costly (I was buying a pound of each ingredient, so while it was costly, it will last me a long time and save me money in the long run).
Despite being a large chain, Costco does have very good products. I am able to pronounce all the ingredients in all the Kirkland products we buy. However, baking soda and vinegar were about all I could find there. My local co-op has a few things, but usually in small quantities. If you want to buy in bulk, Amazon and Mountain Rose Herbs are going to be your best bet (except for baking soda). You may be able to find cheaper prices for a lot of things on Amazon and shipping will certainly be cheaper, but I would trust Mountain Rose Herbs products more. That’s just me, though. I tend to hate buying things online because I can’t pick them up and examine it. I don’t trust things online and Amazon’s focus is too broad for me (doesn’t stop me from buying there, but for natural products it makes me nervous).
Okay, so I didn’t really give you any answers. Just listed some options and discussed them. Ideally, I would buy everything locally. If I couldn’t find it in bulk locally, I would get it from Mountain Rose Herbs. I would avoid Amazon. But finances are an issue to take into consideration, and you may need to start with Amazon to get the ball rolling. I won’t judge you. Happy shopping!
